Warm and Cozy: 4 Ways to Turn Your Space into a Winter Retreat.Posted 12/13/2019
The winter months can get hectic with holiday parties, family get-togethers, last minute shopping and unpredictable weather, which is why it’s so important this time of year to find your own retreat – a place that embodies the spirit of winter and gives you that comfy, carefree feeling.
Thankfully, it doesn’t take much to turn your place into a warm and cozy sanctuary. Here’s a closer look:
Let It Glow
The ambient glow of a candle instantly emits that relaxing vibe you need to wind down after a long day. For a clean design and warm atmosphere, arrange white candles on pedestals and in votives for a staggered look that gives you a little flicker at every angle. Treat your sense of smell to a dose of cozy by adding a scented candle to your collection, like lavender or eucalyptus for a calming touch, or vanilla or pine for a hint of the holidays. Reading a good book but don’t have quite enough candlelight? Shut off the overhead lights and turn on the table lamps for a soft, homey feeling perfect for turning the pages until the sun comes up.
Nothing says comfort like something soft, whether that be a blanket, a fluffy pillow, a shag rug or a wall tapestry. Soften your space with warm, neutral tones to invoke a calm and earthy element, and use pillows and duvet covers to update your décor on the fly. You can also add texture through materials like cashmere, wool and faux fur to create dimension in your cozy retreat. These small additions can make a big impact on your home’s winter feel.
Bring the element of heat into your living space for a satisfyingly wintry night. Settling by the fireplace is an obvious way to warm up and make your space feel even more intimate. But, if you don’t have a fireplace, or if you choose not to use it, put twinkly lights around your mantle or arrange candles on your coffee table and snuggle up with a heated blanket for all the warm feels without the flames. Still cold? Reach for a hot drink, like herbal tea, hot cocoa or apple cider, but skip the everyday mug. Instead, pick a mug that speaks to your mood and add some personality to your nightly cup of cozy.
Clean & Declutter
It’s difficult to relax in a space that’s cluttered or filled with distracting elements. This winter take a moment to clean your living space and remove any nonessential items, keeping only the items that make you happy and storing the items that block your winter Zen. Books, plants and blankets are a great addition to any home, but they can also take up a lot of space. Restore a thrift-shop bookshelf or paint an old basket to store your favorite, cozy items in an original and functional way.
