Dig Into Fall with the Gilbert Farmers Market.

Posted 09/24/2019

There’s a certain magic this time of year. Maybe it’s the cool breeze that brings the promise of relief from the summer heat. Or the tempting smells of comfort food wafting through local markets. Or even the glory of finally taking out your softest sweatshirt and stretchiest comfy pants. No matter the reason, fall is here, and we are here for it!

You can get your first taste of the season at the nearby Gilbert Farmers Market. If you’ve been here before, note that fall hours start Oct. 5 and the market will be open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you’re a first timer, you’re in for a real treat. With tons of vendors offering everything from decadent baked goods to seasonal vegetables to artisanal meats to mouthwatering food trucks, this is definitely an occasion to delight in fresh, local cuisine. If you’re the type that likes to go shopping with a plan, take a look at the fall inspired recipes below and pick up the ingredients as you browse through the market. You can find the vendors attending each week, along with their booth locations by checking Gilbert Market’s Instagram or Facebook account.

Light yet incredibly satisfying.

The word “comfort” doesn’t necessarily come to mind when thinking of a kale salad, but this Kale Salad with Brussels Sprouts, Apples and Hazelnuts will change the way you think about salads. Toasted hazelnuts and Mimolette cheese offer a warm savory flavor profile that turns those leafy greens into a crave-worthy dish. Sweet Honeycrisp apples instantly spark memories of autumn and work well to counteract the kale’s slight bitterness. And a light yet flavorful dressing makes the whole thing sing. This recipe does require a little prep work so be sure to read all the instructions before starting. And if you want to make this the best kale salad of all time, be sure to massage the dressing into the leaves as opposed to just tossing it. This will let the kale relax a bit and give you tender leaves that soak up all the surrounding goodness. The Flower Fly Farm stand and Funny Farm stand should have everything you need to get started.

One-skillet wonder.

Who doesn’t love a stunningly delicious dish that can be whipped up with very little prep in under 30 minutes? These Pan-Seared Sausages with Lady Apples and Watercress will become a weeknight staple all season long. Sweet Italian sausages take on a savory complexity when seared to perfection. Golden brown Lady Apples become the perfectly balanced compliment to the rich sausage. And a simple white wine pan sauce brings a touch of acidity to every bite. If you can’t find watercress at one of the produce stands or want to add a peppery kick to the mix, replace it with some fresh arugula. You can find a wide selection of local sausages at The Proper Beast Charcuterie stand.

Dessert by the handful.

Some say pumpkin is the king of fall flavors but if you ask us, caramel apple is the ruler of them all. Bite sized Caramel Apple Caramels let you indulge in this sticky sweet treat for days on end. Local apple butter and freshly grated nutmeg make these caramels pop. And pure vanilla extract combined with cinnamon and allspice create a flavor profile that’ll inspire you to wrap up in your coziest blanket and watch the leaves fall—or simply open the window and watch the cacti thrive. Before you get started, be sure to pick up a pastry brush, a candy thermometer, and plenty of candy wrappers. Try stopping by Carolyn’s Classics stand for the local apple butter. And if making your own candy seems a little out of your wheelhouse, you can always pick up a bag of beautifully handcrafted caramels at the Bello Caramels stand.
